Newport Skates Outdoor Ice Rink Opens At Market Oval

Newport Skates, the community’s very own outdoor ice skating rink, opened on the evening of November 28th with a Grand Celebration following Newport’s Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. The 7,000 square foot outdoor rink was constructed by Newport in conjunction with the opening of the new section of River Drive, north of Newport Parkway and the Shore Condominium towers. It should serve as an enticing seasonal amenity for area residents and visitors.

WORK TO START ON NJ TRANSIT PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE CONNECTING NEWPORT AND HOBOKEN

NJ TRANSIT has awarded a $6.4 million contract for the construction of a pedestrian bridge to be built over the Long Slip Canal. When completed, the bridge will provide pedestrian access between Newport and Hoboken Terminal. As part of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, the bridge will facilitate foot traffic for Newport and Jersey City residents walking to NJ TRANSIT commuter rail, bus and light rail service, and ferry and PATH services based in Hoboken.

Tennis and Golf at the River Market

Newport residents soon will have the opportunity to brush up on their tennis and golfing skills at the River Market.

The new, regulation sized, hard-court, outdoor tennis court on the roof level of the River Market Garage, uses a DecoTurf cushioned surfacing system. Similar systems are used around the world at tournament sites, training centers and universities, including courts for the US Open and Canadian Open.

River Market also will be home to golf cages and a putting green for golfers to practice swings and master their short game.

MORTON WILLIAMS SUPERMARKETS TO LAUNCH MAJOR NEWPORT EMPORIUM

Newport residents can expect to have a new retail neighbor in their midst in February 2008 when Morton Williams Supermarkets takes up residence on the ground floor of the Shore Condominium Residences in the River Market complex. Construction began in August.

“We are thrilled to become a part of the vibrant Newport community,” said Morton Sloan, President of Morton Williams, “and have made a 30 year commitment to be the best we know how to be.”

NEWPORT FERRY SERVICE TO MANHATTAN RESUMES

New York Waterway has resumed operations of its ferry service between Newport and the West 39th Street Terminal in Manhattan. The new ferry service runs from Paulus Hook to Newport to West 39th Street; then from West 39th Street to Paulus Hook to Newport.

Marsilia A. Boyle, SVP for Development of the LeFrak Organization, stated, “We are delighted to have this service to 39th Street in Manhattan once again, and we look forward to NY Waterway introducing even more stops.”

Ferry service is provided during weekday peak hours, Monday-Friday, from 6:30am to 9:50am, and 4:09pm to 7:39pm. Fares are $6 for a single trip, $57.75 for a 10-trip ticket, and $210 for monthly tickets.

ZIPCAR RENTALS NOW AVAILABLE AT NEWPORT

Need a rental car for a day or just a few hours? Newport residents can now pick up a Zipcar—right here in Newport. Zipcar Inc., a Boston based car sharing company, is enhancing their fleet of nearly 1,000 vehicles by adding Zipcars in the North Garage (561 Washington Blvd.). A Zipcar is a car-sharing vehicle that can be rented anytime by the hour or day.

THIRD ANNUAL NEWPORT 10,000 HITS THE GROUND RUNNING

The third annual Newport 10,000 will kick off on Saturday, May 13th, 2006 at 8:30 a.m. at Newport Town Square. One of Newport’s most highly anticipated events, this year’s race promises to attract an even greater number of runners and spectators. Sanctioned by the USATF and with a prize money pool totaling $20,000 (double the amount doled out in previous years), the 10K (6.2 miles) road race will feature both amateur and high-profile, Olympic-qualifying runners. The very competitive Elite field of this year’s Newport 10,000 will be running for a first prize of $2,500 in both male and female divisions.

NEWPORT LIBERTY MEDICAL ASSOCIATES TO OPEN PRACTICE IN MADISON BUILDING

Newport Liberty Medical Center, LLC, whose principal member is Dr. Robert Lahita, Chief of Medicine of the New Jersey City Medical Center, will open its medical practice at a new 5,000-square foot facility in the James Madison building on Washington Boulevard later this year. Dr Lahita, a world-renowned expert in the treatment of lupus and other autoimmune diseases, joined JCMC in February 2003, and hopes to attract a core of new first rate physicians to the JCMC. The Newport office suites are a key element to his strategy of providing convenient access for physicians, as well as for new and existing patients of many of these physicians, who, like Dr. Lahita, are relocating their practices from Manhattan to Jersey City in conjunction with their new affiliations with the Medical Center.

FINE ART AND CRAFTS FAIR HELD AT NEWPORT

Thousands of Newport residents and visitors from throughout the tri-state area turned out on July 12th and 13th to shop, eat and enjoy a beautiful weekend on the Hudson River as more than 100 vendors set up outdoor boutiques around Town Square and Pavonia Avenue for the Fine Art and Crafts Fair. Shoppers and browsers perused stalls full of beautifully crafted furniture, rich smelling oils, fun house wares and exciting sculptures, and enjoyed hot-off-the-grill specialties from The Restaurants at Newport.

A special thanks must go out to the vendors, restaurants and all who attended to make this event a great success!

The newest amenity on the Hudson River waterfront will be a “beach!” Starting this summer, a generous area will be available for “suntanning on the Hudson River” just outside Newport’s “front door.”

Residents are invited to bring blankets or towels, and spend the day relaxing on this thickly grassed turf along the Waterfront Walkway near the Lighthouse, while enjoying Manhattan’s magnificent skyline and harbor views.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON ROOSEVELT APARTMENTS NEAR HAMILTON PARK

Responding to the ever-increasing request for Jersey City apartment homes near Newport, ground was broken on the Roosevelt, to be located on 10th Street, between Manila Avenue and Luis Marin Boulevard, in the Hamilton Park neighborhood. This latest building joins the highly successful Abraham Lincoln, one block west on 10th Street, which opened in May 2003.

The 7-story Roosevelt will have 133 apartments and on-site parking. The building will include a 9,000 square foot park/play area, and space for a street-level convenience store on 10th and Manila.

NEWPORT HOSTS FIRST ANNUAL 10K RACE

May 2004

The first annual Newport “10,000”-- a 10,000 kilometer race for $10,000 in prize money --“hit the ground running” on Saturday, May 8, 2004.

The Newport race attracted more than 250 runners, including several high-profile, Olympic qualifying athletes, such as Nelson Kiplagat, Patrick Nthiwa, Henry Kipchirchir, Kimberly Saddic, and Maria Buseinei.
